Philosophies: Graphics

2002.04.01

For my own personal website, I am not using a ton of F/flash and graphics for a few reasons... Part of it is a simple matter of time -- there is no denying that graphics (including Flash), can be one of the most time-consuming areas of a website's development. With other clients' website to work on, I choose to concentrate on content.

Another reason is that I know that not everyone worries about upgrading their computer or their browser software every few weeks, nor downloads even the most common plug-ins, nor does everyone have a broadband Internet connection allowing them to slice through graphics like butter. Finally, for my own project, I like the rough and ready classic website that values text over pictures of text, clear navigation and stationary objects.

Good, well-placed graphics and Flash do have their place on the Web, contrary to what the hardcore Web veterans (who learned what HTML was 8 years ago instead of 4 years ago!) will tell you. And when used wisely, they can truly enhance your experience. But I do agree with that old-school breed that organization, clarity and namely Information must reign supreme. The purpose of design is two-fold:

  1. Present a "feel" that represents, enhances, and reinforces the client's image
  2. Make it easy for all visitors to find the information they want

Hopefully this site does that for you. Feel free to contact me with any feedback you have.
