Mandi Zonneveldt

I returned to my home town of Cobram (population 4500) in the early days of January 1996. As one of the babies of the group, I still had two years of high school to complete. The first of those could only be described as hellish. The second was done almost completely from home as most of my school friends left for university. And yes, I took Dutch! In 1998, I moved to Melbourne to begin a BA in Journalism at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. I moved into a funky student house in the 'burbs with Megan Clark and two girls from Tasmania and spent many blurry nights during first year at a dodgy pub in Carlton called the Lemon Tree where we consumed far too many "Rob Specials" (cheap champagne with shot of strawberry schnapps).

In second year, I scored a cadetship on a local paper after writing advertising features for them for a few months. I worked there until a saga over possums threatened to consume my entire being and I realised it was time to move on.

On New Year's Day 2001 (yes, New Year's Day), and armed with my degree, I started a new gig at the Herald Sun. I am now one of Rupert Murdoch's thousands of employees but am mostly proud of the paper I work for. The Herald Sun is Australia's biggest selling daily newspaper, with about 1.5 million readers a day. I've covered youth affairs and education, health, general news and am now creating trouble on the Industrial Relations round. I'm hoping to make a move to the exciting (not) city of Canberra in the not-too-distant future to cover federal politics - if I can convince my other half to make the move. I'm living in sin, like most 20-somethings these days, with my boyfriend of three and a half years, Jeff. He also has a Dutch family. He doesn't want to move to Canberra.
